What You’ll Need to Make These Halloween Bookmarks
Things You’ll Need
Materials
- Colored craft papers (medium-weight construction paper in Halloween colors). Lightweight paper tears during folding. Cardstock is too thick for easy corner sliding.
Alternative: use colored printer paper for budget option. - Pencil (for tracing template patterns). Mechanical pencils work best for precise lines. Alternative: regular #2 pencil works fine.
- Black markers or Sharpies (for drawing faces and details). Permanent markers prevent smudging when kids handle bookmarks.
- Pink marker (for adding cute blush spots). This adds personality to each character.
Assembly Supplies
- Craft glue or glue sticks (glue sticks work better for paper projects). They’re less messy and easier for kids to control.
- Free Halloween Bookmark Template (includes bat, ghost, candy corn, and pumpkin patterns sized perfectly for corner bookmarks)
Tools
- Sharp craft scissors (adult-supervised cutting tool). Clean cuts make professional-looking results. Alternative: safety scissors for independent kid use on thicker lines.
- Ruler (optional but helpful for crisp folds and measuring). Metal rulers work best for sharp creases.

Step-by-Step Instructions: 4 Halloween Bookmarks for kids
Before getting started, make sure to download and print the provided template. The template includes patterns for a bat, a ghost, a candy corn and a pumpkin bookmark.
Halloween Bat Corner Bookmark
Step 1: Preparing the Bat Patterns

Download, print, and cut out the patterns. Let’s start with the bat bookmark. The square paper cutouts will be used for the corner bookmark base. The bat patterns include two wings, two ears, two inner ear parts, and two fangs.
Step 2: Making the Initial Base Folds

Place the square paper on a flat surface and fold it in half diagonally to form a triangle. Fold the bottom right corner upward and align it with the right side of the top corner.
Step 3: Unfolding the Sides

Fold the bottom left corner upward and align it with the left side of the top corner. Then unfold both folds.
Step 4: Forming the Pocket

Take the top corner of the top layer and fold it downward, bringing the tip to the middle point of the opposite side. This will form the pocket part in the middle.
Step 5: Folding in the Right Flap

Fold the right bottom corner along its crease and tuck the top half of the triangle flap inside the base pocket.
Step 6: Completing the Corner Bookmark

Flatten the flap neatly inside the pocket. Repeat the same with the left flap.
Step 7: Cutting the Edge, Making the Ear Parts

Trim the open corner and sides of the origami corner bookmark to give it a rounded edge. Glue the inner ear cutouts onto the outer ear cutouts.
Step 8: Attaching the Ears and Drawing the Face

Glue the ears onto the top rounded edge of the bookmark. Use a black pen or marker to draw the eyes and mouthline of the bat, then glue the fangs along the bottom side of the mouth.
Step 9: Completing the Bat Corner Bookmark

Attach the wings to both sides of the bat to complete the bookmark. Let’s craft the rest of the bookmarks.
Crafting the Candy Corn Corner Bookmark
Step 1: Preparing the Patterns & Making the Bookmark

For the candy corn bookmark, prepare another corner bookmark base with rounded edges, just like we prepared for the bat bookmark.
Step 2: Attaching the Patterns & Drawing the Face

Glue the yellow and orange pieces of the candy corn onto the bookmark base. Use a black marker to draw a face, and a pink marker to draw the blush spots. And your candy corn bookmark is ready!
Crafting the Ghost Corner Bookmark
Step 1: Preparing the Patterns & Making the Bookmark

For the ghost bookmark, prepare a corner bookmark base with rounded edges. The ghost includes a hat and bow pattern—you can choose one. Glue the bow cutouts together.
Step 2: Attaching the Patterns & Drawing the Face

Attach the bow to the rounded edge of the ghost bookmark base and glue the arm cutouts on both closed sides. Draw the face using a black marker and add the blush spots using a pink marker.
Crafting the Pumpkin Corner Bookmark
Step 1: Preparing the Patterns & Making the Bookmark

For the pumpkin bookmark, use orange square paper to make a rounded-edge corner bookmark base. Prepare the leaf and vine patterns from green paper and the stem pattern from brown paper.
Step 2: Attaching the Patterns & Drawing the Face

Glue the stem to the top middle of the rounded edge, then attach the leaf and vine cutouts to both sides of the stem. Draw a pumpkin face with markers to finish the bookmark. To use the bookmarks, simply slide the open pocket over a page corner.

Pro Tips for Perfect Halloween Bookmarks
If you’re new to corner bookmarks, don’t worry! These Halloween designs are super beginner-friendly and fun to make. Here are a few tips to make the process even smoother:
Choose the Right Paper Weight – Medium-weight craft paper (65-80 lb) creates bookmarks that hold their shape without being too thick for book pages. Construction paper works well, but avoid tissue paper or cardstock.
Master the Basic Fold First – Practice the corner bookmark fold with scrap paper before using your good colored paper. Once you understand the pocket formation, decorating becomes much easier.
Cut Templates Precisely – Take your time cutting small details like fangs, ears, and leaves. Sharp, clean edges make the finished bookmark look professional rather than rough.
Layer Glue Strategically – Apply glue to the back of decorative pieces, not the bookmark itself. This prevents glue from showing around edges and keeps the finished product clean.
Test Your Bookmark – Before decorating, slide your basic fold over a book page to ensure it fits properly. Adjust the pocket depth if needed.
Start Simple – Begin with the candy corn or ghost design, which have fewer small pieces. Save the bat design for when you’re comfortable with the process.

Frequently Asked Questions: Halloween Corner Bookmarks
What size paper works best for corner bookmarks?
Use 6×6 inch squares for standard-sized books. For children’s picture books, try 5×5 inch squares. For textbooks or larger books, 7×7 inch squares work better.
How do I fix a bookmark that won’t stay on the page
The pocket might be too loose. Try folding the side flaps deeper into the pocket, or start with a slightly smaller paper square for a tighter fit.
Can younger children make these independently?
Ages 6+ can handle most steps with supervision. Children 4-5 need help with cutting and precise folding, but can assist with gluing and decorating.
How do I store these bookmarks when not in use?
Store flat in a book or folder to prevent the pocket from getting crushed. Avoid storing under heavy objects that might flatten the decorative elements.
