What You’ll Need for the Fall Mobile Hanging
Papers & Base:
- Medium-weight craft paper in fall colors (recommend 65-80 lb cover stock – lightweight papers tear easily, cardstock is too stiff for gentle movement)
- Sturdy cardboard for base ring (cereal box cardboard works perfectly – aim for 6-8 inch diameter)
- Cotton sewing thread (avoid thick yarn or embroidery floss – they’re too heavy and prevent graceful swaying)
Assembly Supplies:
- White craft glue or glue stick (liquid glue gives stronger bonds than tape for this hanging project)
- Yarn in coordinating fall color for wrapping base ring (any medium-weight yarn works beautifully)
- Tapestry needle for thick yarn threading (the large eye makes yarn work so much easier!)
- Regular sewing needle for cotton thread attachment
Tools:
- Sharp craft scissors (dull scissors create jagged edges that show on delicate paper leaves)
- Pencil for tracing patterns (mechanical pencils give cleaner lines than regular #2)
- Ruler for measuring consistent spacing (a clear ruler helps you see placement better)
Step-by-Step Instructions: Papercraft Fall Mobile Hanging
Step 1: Preparing the Patterns

The provided template includes patterns for 3 different leaves and a mushroom. You can select and trace the sizes you’d like for your mobile hanging. Select fall-themed colored papers and trace the patterns on them using a pencil. Use sharp scissors to cut out the traced patterns. If you’re going to add 12 strings, you’ll need to cut out 24 pieces of each pattern.
Step 2: Crafting the Mushroom

Glue the dot cutouts on any one of the mushroom caps, and glue a stalk cutout to the other cap cutout. Glue the stalk cutout to the dotted cap as well. We’ll need 2 mushroom patterns like these for each string.
Step 3: Preparing a String

You can use cotton thread for this craft. Using yarn or thick threads wouldn’t be the best option. Measure and cut out 1.5 times the required length of string/ thread.
Step 4: Attach a Leaf Pattern to the String

Take any two identical leaf cutouts and apply glue along the middle of one; apply glue all over the other leaf. Leave 1 or 2 inches of string from its open end and align the string along the glue line in the middle of the leaf. Place the glued leaf on top of the string-attached leaf and align both leaf patterns neatly around the sides.
Step 5: Attaching the Next Leaf Pattern

Please take the next 2 identical leaf cutouts and attach them to the string similarly, but make sure to keep half an inch gap with the previous leaf pattern attached to the string.
Step 6: Attaching the Mushroom Pattern

Take the plain mushroom pattern and apply glue vertically along the middle of its wrong side. Place the string along the glue, and then glue the dotted mushroom on top of the string-attached one. There, one of our Fall leaf strings is ready!
Step 7: Prepare 12 Fall Leaf Strings

Similarly, prepare 11 more strings; we’ll need a total of 12 strings for our Fall mobile hanging. Mix and match with different colored cutouts to give it a nice look.
Step 8: Crafting the Base

I traced the outer surface of a teacup saucer on a cardboard for the base. About 1 thick round base will do for the mobile hanging base. Use yarn to cover the cardboard base.
Step 9: Mark the Base for String Places

We need to mark 12 dots on the base by keeping an even gap between them. Use a marker or a pen to mark them.
Step 10: Attaching the String to the Base Ring

Attach a needle to the top open end of a leaf attached string. Insert the needle through a dot marked on the base and pull it out through the opposite end. Leave 1 1-inch string on top of the mushroom pattern and pull out the rest.
Step 11: Attach all Strings to the Base

One by one, attach all 12 leaf strings to the base.
Step 12: Preparing the Hanging Yarn/ String

Measure and cut out 12-inch-long yarn, and attach it to a tapestry needle. Tie 2 knots at its open end and then pull it through a spot on the base. Pull the needle out from bottom to top. Pull the yarn all the way through, stopping at its knot.
Step 13: Secure the Hanging Yarns

Attach a total of 4 hanging yarns to the base ring, keeping an even gap between them. Hold all the open ends of the 4 yarn strands together and tie a knot. And that’s it! Wasn’t that fun and easy?

Tips for a Perfect Papercraft Fall Mobile Hanging!
Crafting a Fall mobile hanging is simple and fun, but here are a few beginner tips to help you avoid common mistakes and make your hanging decor look extra pretty:
Choose the Right Colors – Stick to warm Fall shades like orange, brown, red, yellow, and deep green. These colors will instantly give your mobile that cozy Autumn vibe. You can also mix in a metallic gold or copper sheet for a festive sparkle.
Use Sturdy, Medium-Weight Paper – while regular craft paper works, using medium-weight craft paper is recommended for this craft. Thick cardstock papers or lightweight craft papers wouldn’t be the best choices for this project.
Cut Neatly – Take your time while cutting out the patterns from the template. Using sharp scissors will keep the edges smooth, and your finished pieces will look much cleaner.
Keep the Strings Even – When attaching paper patterns to the thread, try to keep equal spacing so the designs don’t cluster together. This will make your mobile look more balanced.
Lightweight is Best – Don’t make your patterns too large or heavy. The mobile should move gently through the air, allowing lightweight papers to flow beautifully.
Secure Knots Tightly – Tie each pattern securely to the string. A small dab of glue on the knot will keep the cutouts from sliding down.
Arrange Before Gluing – Before attaching the strings to the base ring, lay them out flat on a table to check if the colors and patterns are evenly distributed. This way, your mobile will look full and well-balanced once hung.
With these simple tips, you’ll have a beautiful Fall mobile hanging that sways gently and brings Autumn charm to your space. ????✨
