Time: 30-45 minutes

Important Note for Parents & Teachers
What Your Child Will Learn Through This Activity:
Fine Motor Development: Cutting felt, manipulating small pieces, and precise gluing motions strengthen the tiny muscles in hands and fingers—essential preparation for writing, buttoning clothes, and using utensils independently.
Hand-Eye Coordination: Aligning pieces, following templates, and controlled painting movements enhance the crucial connection between visual processing and motor skills.
Executive Functioning: Following multi-step directions, planning the sequence of assembly, and problem-solving when pieces don’t fit perfectly develops critical thinking and task completion skills.
Pre-Literacy Skills: Using scissors correctly builds the same muscle groups needed for proper pencil grip and writing control.
Emotional Expression: Creating their unique witch character allows children to process emotions and develop self-confidence through creative accomplishment.
Age Recommendations & Developmental Readiness:
Ideal for Ages 4-12 years
- Ages 4-5: Require adult assistance with cutting and hot glue. Focus on painting, decorating, and simple assembly steps.
- Ages 6-8: Can handle most steps independently with supervision. Great for building confidence in following detailed instructions.
- Ages 9-12: Perfect independence level. Can modify designs and add personal creative touches.
Not Recommended Under Age 4: This craft involves small pieces, precise cutting, and functional sharp points that aren’t developmentally appropriate for toddlers.

Step-by-Step Instructions: How to Make a Recycled Spoon Witch
Step 1: Prepare the Templates and Felt Patterns

Download our free Spoon Witch template and cut out all the patterns neatly. Trace the patterns onto your chosen felt fabrics and cut them out carefully. The template includes patterns for the witch’s hat, hair, dress, and broomstick.
Step 2: Gather Your Spoon and Stick

Select a clean spoon for the craft. You can use a plastic spoon, but we’re using a disposable fiber spoon. Collect a small dry stick from outdoors to use as the broomstick handle.
Step 3: Paint the Spoon

Choose a green (or any preferred color) acrylic paint for the witch’s skin. Apply a coat of paint to the backside of the spoon, which will serve as the front of your witch. Apply a second coat if needed. Let it dry while preparing the other felt pieces.
Step 4: Prepare the Broom Fringe

Take the rectangle strip of felt for the broomstick and cut small, even fringes along one long side.
Step 5: Assemble the Mini Broomstick

Use hot glue to coil the uncut side of the fringed felt around the end of the small stick. Continue gluing as you wrap the felt around the stick to complete the mini broomstick.
Step 6: Decorate the Witch Hat

Cut a slit along the yellow-marked line on the base of the hat. Glue the hat band and star cutouts onto the hat using hot glue.
Step 7: Decorate the Felt Dress

Use the small dot cutouts to embellish the witch’s dress. You can arrange them however you like to create a unique design.
Step 8: Attach the Hair Base

Glue the flat side of the spoon’s bowl part to the hair base cutout, ensuring it sticks firmly.
Step 9: Attach the Front Hair Section

Glue the front hair piece to the top end of the spoon’s bowl part, covering the edges neatly.
Step 10: Assemble the Dress, Hat, and Broomstick

Insert the top end of the spoon witch’s head through the slit in the hat from the bottom side. Glue the hat and head together to secure them. Use a sharpie to draw the witch’s face and add pink acrylic paint blush dots on the cheeks.

Pro Tips for Perfect Spoon Witch Crafting
After making dozens of these adorable witches with my little one, I’ve picked up some tricks that make the process smoother:
Choose the right spoon: A clean, smooth spoon works best. Fiber or plastic spoons are perfect for beginners, and they paint more evenly than you might expect!
Cut felt carefully: Use sharp scissors and follow the template closely to avoid uneven edges. If you’re crafting with younger children, pre-cut the pieces for them.
Paint in layers: Apply thin coats of paint to prevent drips and let each coat dry fully before adding the next. Trust me, patience here pays off with a much neater finish!
Secure glue properly: Use hot glue for faster assembly, but be careful with your fingers (or let adults handle this part). Fabric glue is safer if you’re crafting with kids, though it takes longer to set.
Check alignment: When gluing the broomstick, hair, or hat, position pieces lightly first to make sure everything lines up before applying glue. This saves so much frustration!
Be creative: You can change dress colors, hairstyles, or add extra details like buttons, tiny flowers, or glitter stars. Each witch can have her own personality!
